Things you need to know

All prospective employees will be asked to supply evidence of their eligibility to work in the UK. This is part of the requirements set out in the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.

We will ask to see appropriate official documents, for example, a document showing your National Insurance number, your birth certificate, passport or Home Office approved work permit. Please note that the Council is not currently registered to issue certificates of sponsorship to Tier 2 applicants from countries outside the European Economic Area.

Further information will be sent to you if you are shortlisted for the job vacancy and invited to attend our selection assessment process.

English language requirement

All employees who work in public-facing roles with the Council are required to speak English to the necessary standard. This requirement is set out in the Immigration Act 2016, and will be part of our selection assessment process.

We, along with all public authorities, are "subject to this fluency duty and should have regard to the guidance in this English language requirement for public sector workers: code of practice in relation to all of their staff who work in public-facing roles including permanent and fixed-term employees, apprentices, self-employed contractors and agency temps."

"Fluency relates to a person's language proficiency and their ability to speak with confidence and accuracy, using accurate sentence structures and vocabulary. In a public-facing role, a person should be able to choose the right kind of vocabulary for the situation at hand without a great deal of hesitation. They should listen to the member of the public and understand their needs. They should tailor their approach to each conversation appropriate to the member of the public, responding clearly with fine shades of meaning, even in complex situations".
